Harrow County School for Boys

Bridge Club 1969

by Chris Kazmierczak

Most of the ace players, namely Peter Collings, Spencer Maizels, Nigel Knight and Stephen Ray, who formed the heart of the club, had to bid farewell during the Easter Term.  However, we turned up trumps by discovering some promising Lower-Sixth-Formers amongst the pack dealt to us at the beginning of the year.

Outstanding results included the defeat of a team of experts from the London County Contract Bridge Association in an invitation match at the Daily Mail Exhibition and a double victory in a triangular fixture against Eton College and Stowe School.

Unfortunately, the team, led by the captain, Chris Kazmierczak, were unable to duplicate last year's success in the Daily Mail's Schools' Cup, being squeezed out of the final by Christ's College, Finchley.  The seemingly invulnerable Staff Team, showing their usual finesse, dealt us a sitting blow by defeating us on two occasions.

I would like to echo all the thanks of the members of the Bridge Club to Mr. Gibbs, our Jack-of-all-trades, for doing all the spade work.  He is always ready to give a helping hand.  The Secretary, Richard Caplan, has proved ideally suited to the job.  He has given valuable service, being always cheerful and full of tricks.

Colours were awarded to the following:-

Chris Kazmierczak (Captain), Steven Ray, Peter Collings, Nigel Knoght, Spencer Maizels, Richard Crouch.

Results of Inter-school matches:-

1st Team: Won 17, Lost 7

2nd Team: Won 4, Lost 6
