Thanks to the indefatigable Mr. Wood, we were able to see Robert Bolt's "A Man for All Seasons" at the end of October. It was a very fine production, overshadowed only by the greatness of "Julius Caesar". Nigel Rogers was a little too young and enigmatic as More, but he gave a pleasing dignity and a centre of calm to the play. The supporting cast presented a number of interesting cameos: particularly noticeable were Bruce Liddington a sthe Spaniard, Chapuys, and Francis Matthews as young Roper. Anthony Trackman was good as the Common Man until he allowed his sense of humour to run riot with properties; Robert Samuels did well as the crawler, Rich; and two noble figures were created by Stephen Davis as Henry VIII and Richard Salter as Norfolk, though both had occasional weaknesses of movement that jarred.
All in all, and thanks to Mrs. Zideman's magnificent costumes, the evening was a most pleasing one. We shall miss Mr. Wood.
(Mr. A. W. Wood left the History Department in January 1967 for a post at the Commonwealth Institute)
