Norman Hargreaves West
Sadly, Nobby West died in May 2011.  He was born in 1925, and was the son of Sidney Hargreaves West, who was also an Old Gaytonian.  He enrolled at Harrow County in 1936/7 and left during the war to join the RAF.  He became a pilot with BEA (later British Airways).  Nobby played for the Old Gaytonians Rugby Club from 1946 to 1962 and was Captain in 1958/9 and 1959/60. Nobby was also a keen and accomplished yachtsman. 

Stanley Clark
Stanley Clark, who attended Harrow County School from 1927 to 1932, died on June 14 2011. He was 95. Stan spent the whole of his working life with the GPO, later BT, as a communications engineer.

He and his wife Joan, who died in 2002, were keen musicians, noted particularly for their classical duets on the piano. They were both respected church organists, he for his local Methodist church – in latter years at Iver, Buckinghamshire – and she at the Anglican church in Iver. Stan’s nephew Alan Bunting, who attended HCS from 1948 to 1953, supplied these obituary notes.

Ron Stiff
Sadly, we have learned that Ron Stiff has passed away at the age of 95.  He attended Harrow County from 1928 to 1934, and was a great thespian both at school and in the Old Gaytonians Dramatic Club. He played King Henry IVth in the School production in 1934 and was School Captain the same year. (for a matter of months before leaving).

Gilbert Davey
Sadly, Gilbert Davey died on 6th April, 2011, in Peterborough, at the age of 97.  Gilbert had a lifelong passion for radio and wrote several books on radio for novices.  A Major in WWII, he made the first Allied radio transmission from Berlin after it had fallen to the Allies.

Dr. Geoff Egan
Sadly, Geoff Egan died of a heart attack on 24th December 2010, aged 59.  He attended Harrow County from 1963-70.  Geoff was an Archaeologist at the Museum of London who specialised in medieval and post-medieval ‘small finds’ and headed one of the City guilds.

John Edward Pitson, MBE
Sadly, John Pitson died on 25th November 2010 in Australia, aged 92.  John was the Director (Typography) of the Australian Government Printing Service, following service with Her Majesty's Stationery Office in London.  Having started his education at Slough secondary School, he entered Harrow County where he matriculated with honours and then apprenticed at HMSO's Harrow Press.  He joined the RAF in 1939. 

John Talbot
Sadly, we have learned that John Talbot passed away in March 2010.

Frank Boyden
Sadly, we have learned that Framk Boyden died on 15th November 2010, aged 95.  Frank was a member of the 1932 1st XI Rugby team, and was a founding member of the Old Gaytonians Rugby Club in 1934.

John Empson
Sadly, J D Empson died in November 2010.  He started Harrow County in 1934 and was in VI Science in 1939/40, when classes were transferred to Harrow School because part of the school buildings were being used by the RAF. 
He gained his B.Sc.(Agric) at Reading University in 1947, and was awarded a Scholarship by the Board of Agriculture and Fisheries for Post-Graduate work at Lincoln College, Oxford. An Agricultural Economist.

Ken Webster
Sadly, Ken Webster died in December 2010. 
Ken was at Harrow County 1944-49.  He was a former Old Gaytonian scrum half, a long-time member of the Old Gaytonians Rugby Club and an active member of the Old Gaytonians Association.

F A W Pillborough
Sadly, F A Pillborough died on 10th October 2010, aged 94.  He attended Harrow County from 1927 to 1934, was a Prefect in 1932, a member of the 1st XI Rugby team in 1932/33 and 1933/34 and played the part of Don Pedro in the School Dramatic Society production of Much Ado About Nothing in 1932.

David Sherriff
Sadly, Dave Sherriff, former OGRFC Club Captain who attended Harrow County from 1948, died last Wednesday 7th July 2010.  The funeral service is to be held next Tuesday 20th July at 2pm at St Nicolas Church, High Street, Cranleigh, Surrey GU6 8AS.

Tracey Berge (née Dickins)
Sadly, Tracey passed away on 23rd April 2010, aged 48.  Tracey was the granddaughter, daughter, wife and daughter-in-law of Old Gaytonians. She was also a talented trained actress and she played many memorable roles with the Pinner Players, of which she became Chairman.

Lewis Hawken
Sadly, Lewis Hawken, CB, MA, who attended Harrow County from 1943 to 1950, passed away on 9th March 2010.  He was an athlete and Vice-Captain of Cricket in 1950. 

Mervyn Graham Jones
Sadly, Graham Jones, who attended Harrow County from 1952 to 1957, passed away on 4th February 2010 after a brave fight against multiple myeloma. His early career was in the Merchant Navy. He later became a systems analyst for De Beers Diamond Corp.

Edward Gover
Sadly, Ted Gover died on March 17th 2010 at the age of 87.  He is remembered as a generous supporter of the Old Gaytonians Association.

Harold Charles Allaway
Sadly, Harold Allaway died on 3rd January 2010.  He started Harrow County in 1927, and was a prefect in 1933-34.

Chris Hunt
Sadly, Chris Hunt, who attended Harrow County from 1968 to 1975, in February 2010 as a result of liver cancer that had ensued from previous melanoma.

Robert Bruce Anderson
Sadly, Robert Bruce Anderson died on 20th November 2009, aged 91, in Kelowna, British Columbia.  He served in the RAF and is remembered for his trumpet playing.

Air Vice-Marshal Charles Maugham, CB,  CBE, AFC
Sadly, Charles Gilbert Maugham died on December 1st 2009, aged 86.  He was in the Harrow County ATC and was called up in 1942.  He was an RAF fighter and bomber pilot who commanded Hawker Hunter and Avro Vulcan squadrons in the 1950s and 1960s and subsequently rose to become Senior Air Staff Officer of Strike Command.  In retirement he was General secretary of the Royal British Legion.

Albert Dunkley
Sadly, we have learned that Albert Dunkley, who was at Harrow County 1935-1940, died in April 2009.

George Goodes
Sadly, George Goodes, who started Harrow County in 1935, died on November 20th, 2009.  George Goodes spent his entire career with Kodak, retiring as Export Manager in 1983.

John Edmunds
Sadly, John Edmunds died on 28th June, 2009.  He started Harrow County in 1938, and was awarded a Proficiency Life Saving Certificate in 1940.  John lived in Sutton, Surrey.

Denis Higham
Sadly, Denis Higham, one of the oldest Old Gaytonians, who started Harrow County in 1925, died on October 29th, 2009, aged 95.  He was a former (original?) member of the Old Gaytonians Rugby Club.  Denis Higham was Junior Sports Champion in 1928 and Junior-Senior Sports Champion in 1930. Middlesex County under 18 Long Jump Champion, 1932. A.A.A. Junior Long Jump Champion in 1933. Second in 100 Yards at National Provincial Bank Sports, 1936.

Harry Bailey
Sadly, Harry Bailey died on 26th October, 2009.  He was an Old Gaytonian who lived in Harrow and later in Yorkshire.

A R D Murray, CBE
Sadly, Reg Murray died on 7th October, 2009, aged 89.  He was at Harrow County from 1933 and lived in Northwood.  Reg was a ham radio operator, call sign G4KEO.

Mr. Scott Williams
Sadly, Scott Williams, as a result of an accident, at the tragically young age of 35.  Mr. Williams taught Maths and coached rugby at Harrow High School from 2002 to 2006.  He played rugby for the West London Rugby Football Club (formerly the Old Gaytonians).

Philip Kenneth Brooks
Sadly, Phil Brooks, who was at Harrow County 1935 to 1940, died on July 11th, aged 85.  He was a member of the 1939 First XI Cricket team, and worked in the Kodak research laboratory during the Second World War, followed by a lifetime career at Kodak.
 

Brian Raiment
Sadly, Brian Raiment, who was at Harrow County from 1950 to 1957, died 3rd June 2009, after suffering for some time from leukaemia.  He was a member of Kenton house, and is remembered as a cricketer, both for the School and later for the old Gaytonians Cricket Club. 

Mr. Bernard Marchant
Sadly, Mr. Marchant, former teacher at Harrow County, passed away on Saturday June 20th 2009.

Peter Bellamy
Sadly, Peter Bellamy, who was at Harrow County from 1939, died on March 12th 2009 after a short illness, aged 81.  He was holder of many School athletic records. 

John Storey
Sadly, John Storey, who was at Harrow County from 1959-64, died on April 1st 2009 after a short illness.  John was a fine cricketer and talented musician.  He was a member of Plum Nellie which was formed at the School and played some 40 gigs locally. After this, John was part of the Calico String Band which had commercial success between 1969-1974.

Richard Burnett
Sadly, Richard Burnett, who was at Harrow County from 1944-51 died in February 2009 after a long illness.  He was a prefect in 1950 and acted in various School dramatic productions including The Merry Wives of Windsor (1949), The Duke in Darkness (March 1950) and Much Ado about Nothing (November 1950)

Michael Casemore
Sadly, we have learned that Mike Casemore died in 2007, age 73.  He had emigrated with his parents to Australia in 1951.  He presented the Sculling Championship Trophy to the School. He acted in various School dramatic productions including The Merry Wives of Windsor (1949), The Duke in Darkness (March 1950) and Much Ado about Nothing (November 1950)

David Palmer
Sadly, David Palmer of Chalfont St. Peter, who was at Harrow County from 1961-68 has died suddenly on 5th December 2008, at the age of 58.

Mr. Gerwyn Williams
Sadly, Gerwyn Williams, who taught Physical Education at Harrow County from 1952-55 died in February, 2009 at  the age of 84.  He was a Llanelli and London Welsh full back, won 13 caps for Wales between 1950-54 and was in the Welsh side that famously beat the All Blacks in 1953.  He coached the very successful 1952-53 1st XV with Geoff Norman & Roy Tapper. 

Geoffrey Perkins
1953 - 2008

Sadly, Geoffrey Perkins  died in a road accident on August 29th, 2008, aged 55.  Geoffrey was a producer, writer and performer, and was  former Head of Comedy at the BBC.  He was at Harrow County 1964-1971.

Roy Hargreaves
Sadly, Roy Hargreaves died in Australia at the end of September 2008.   He was at Harrow County from 1942 and was a frequent contributor to the "Old Gaytonian".
 

 

 

New Don Kincaid CD

Don Kincaid, who taught modern languages at HCS in the '50's and '60's is remembered for his virtuoso musical performances at the Afro American Music and 6th Form Society. Primarily for Gayts, Don is now releasing a limited edition CD of an archive recording of one of these concerts made in the "New Hall" with sleeve notes by the internationally respected authority on blues music (& Gayt), Paul Oliver, who incidentally has recorded a soundbite (for those who can play it). Gaytonian Andy Findon, (67 to 72),  has recorded another album. The title track is a full length version of the “Young’s – Sea To Plate” jingle, originally recorded for TV by Andy Findon.  Also featuring Christopher Gunning’s new saxophone quartet arrangement of his “Poirot” TV theme and the music from “We Were Soldiers” by Nick Glennie Smith.

Alec Swainson
Sadly, Alec (W. A.) Swainson died on May 18th 2008, aged 87.   He was at Harrow County 1932-36. 

Lieutenant Michael Morsehead
Sadly, Mike Morshead has died.  He taught Science at Harrow County from 1950 to 1957, and is remembered for running the Naval Section of the CCF.
Obituary

Charles Butler
Sadly, Mr. C. W. Butler died in May, 2008, aged 94.  He joined the staff of Harrow County in 1947 to teach Chemistry.
He left Harrow County to teach at Holland Park Comprehensive School.

Reg Gigney
Sadly, Reg Gigney died on March 13th, 2008.  He entered Harrow County in 1929, and was 92 years old.  

On Sports Day, 1932,  Reg Gigney was awarded a special prize for his constant, unflagging support of school games, and he is mentioned in Alec Amos's History of Harrow County Rugby.

Peter Fernley
Sadly, Peter Henry Fernley, who attended Harrow County from 1955 to 1961, passed away peacefully far too early, after a short illness, on 27th February 2008. 
He leaves his wife, Susie, children Joseph and Lisa and grandchildren Samuel and Evangelina.  

George Birrell
Sadly, George Birrell died on February 21st, 2008.  He was 86 and was the son of Billy Birrell, manager of Chelsea Football Club.  

George Birrell went on the School visit to Germany and Switzerland in 1939.

Geoff Norman
Sadly, Geoffrey Norman, OBE, who attended Harrow County 1946-53, died on February 10, 2008.  
He played in the 1st XV rugby team 1948-53, cricket team (Captain 1950) and tennis team.  He was House Captain 1952-53 and School Captain the same year.  He went on to play for Wasps Rugby Club and
was capped for England School Boy's in 1952.  He went to Brasenose College, Oxford, and became Assistant Secretary for Commissions for the Lord Chancellors Department.

Robert Dell
Sadly, Reverend Robert S. Dell died on January 13, 2008. He entered Harrow County in 1933.  He was Vice-Principal of Ridley Hall College of Theology, Cambridge.

Mr. Harry Mees
Sadly, Harry Mees, who taught at Harrow County and then at Gayton High from 1947 to 1982,  died at the age of 88 on January 15th, 2008.

Tony Manders
Sadly, Tony Manders died in September, 2007.  He was at Harrow County 1939-45, was a member of Kenton House, a Prefect and played Rugby for the 1st XV.

Vic Senior
Sadly, Colonel Vic Senior, MC & bar (our only double MC), died on Friday July 27th, after a short illness, at his home in Hospital, Co Limerick, Ireland, aged 91. 
He served during WW2 in the 50th Royal Tank Regiment, first in North Africa with the 8th Army (where he won his first MC) and latterly in Greece (where he won his second MC). He subsequently served in various posts abroad with the diplomatic service and retired to work with the service charity SSAFA.  He wrote many articles about his war experiences and local history.  Immensely proud of his Harrow County heritage, he was a member of the first School rugby XV to play against the Old Gaytonians.  

Barry Hortin
Sadly, Barry Hortin died on 19th June, 2007.  He was at Harrow County in the early 1950s and was a Prefect in 1956.  Barry played Rugby for the School and the Old Gaytonians.

Bob Theis
Sadly, Bob Theis died on 17th May, 2007 after an illness.  He was at Harrow County 1953-58, was a keen cyclist and played rugby for the School.  Will be hugely missed by children Karen, Martin and Kelly.

Roger J. Gershon
Sadly, Roger Gershon  died in April after an accident near his home near Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands, aged 56.  He was at Harrow County from 1962-68 and was a retired accountant.

R. Silsby
Sadly, Bob Silsby, a Vice President of the Old Gaytonians Association, died on 1st April, 2007, aged 77.  He was a keen and loyal member of the rugby and cricket clubs and for many years Membership Secretary of the OGA.

W. E. Balfour
Sadly, Dr. William. E. Balfour, who started at Harrow County in 1938,  died on February 1st, 2007. He was a fellow of Kings College, Cambridge, and retired from university teaching in 1997.

Alan Joy
Sadly, Alan Joy, who was at Harrow County from 1944 to 1950,  died on February 9th, 2007, as a result of an accident.

Roger Kraushaar
Sadly, Roger Kraushaar, who left  Harrow County in 1965,  has died. 
He was former Chairman of the Old Gaytonians Athletics Club, and had been ill for a number of years.  He graduated from Jesus College, Cambridge and taught French and Spanish at St. Nicholas Grammar (Haydon) School in Northwood for nearly 25 years.   

Desmond Bye
Sadly, Desmond Bye, who started School at  Harrow County in 1930,  died in October 2006.   
He played for the Rugby 1st XV in 1934 (click for photograph)
and for the Cricket 1st XI as wicket keeper in 1935.   

Clive Perry
Sadly, Clive Perry, who started his theatrical career at Harrow County and became in important figure in British Theatre, died on November  11, 2006, aged 70.  He was at  School from 1948 to 1955.

There is to to be a Celebration of his love and contribution to the British Theatre at the Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh on Sunday 25th Feb 2007  7.00pm.

Geoff Holmes
Sadly, Geoff Holmes, who started Harrow County in 1931,  died on October 23rd, 2006, aged 86. 
He was in the Parachute Regiment during the war and went in at Arnhem, where he was captured four times, released once, escaped twice and stayed to care for the wounded.  In the 1990s he instituted commemorative drops of veterans at Arnhem.  

Frank Raine-Allen
Sadly, Frank Raine Allen, who started Harrow County in Form I in 1926, died in October in Guildford at the age of 92.  He was the Civil Defence officer for Middlesex. 

Ryszard Gagola
Sadly, Rick Gagola, author and artist, who was at the school from 1966, died on October 23, 2006. 

John Lever
Sadly, Professor M John Lever, who was at the school from 1954 to 1962,  died on Sunday September 17th, 2006, of cancer.   He was Professor of Physiological Mechanics and Head of the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College, London. 

David Fickling
Sadly, David Fickling, who started Harrow County in Form 2A in 1940, died on August  4th, 2006.

 

Colin Rowlinson
Sadly, Colin Rowlinson, who started Harrow County in Form 2A in 1938, has died in Australia, aged 80.

Laurence Thame
Sadly, Laurie Thame, who started Harrow County in Form 2A in 1931, died on May  7th, 2006, aged 85.

Squadron Leader David Munson, DFC
Sadly, David Munson, who started Harrow County in 1929, died on July 7th, 2006, aged 89.  He was a pilot in 236 Squadron flying Beaufighters in the celebrated North Coates Strike Wing from the autumn of 1942 to January 1944.

Sir Roy Denman
Sadly, Roy Denman, who started Harrow County in 1935, died on April 4th, 2006, aged 81.  A passionate European, civil servant and author, Sir Roy helped to negotiate Britain's entry into the Common Market in 1973 and was the European Community's Ambassador in Washington 1982 to 1989.

 

Michael Rolph
Sadly, Michael Rolph who was at Harrow County 1948-54 has died, aged 69.

Derick Richardson
Sadly, Derick Richardson, a member of the very successful 1963 First XV died suddenly from a heart attack on March 7th 2006 at his home in Sutton Coldfield

John 'Jack' Cotter
Sadly,
John ‘Jack’ Cotter, former Captain of the Old Gaytonians Rugby Football Club, who was at Harrow County 1928-33, passed away on February 1st 2006 aged 89, after suffering from Parkinson’s Disease for some years. 

Lord Merlyn-Rees
Sadly, Merlyn Rees, father of Old Gaytonians Gareth, Glynn and Patrick Rees. died on January  6th, 2006, aged 85. 

He was Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 1974-76 and Home Secretary from 1976-79.  
 

 

Chris Elvin
Sadly, Chris Elvin, who was at Harrow County 1960-67, died suddenly on October 26th, 2005, aged 56, in France, from a brain aneurism.

Peter Owen
Sadly, Peter Owen, who was at Harrow County 1953-59, died suddenly on Monday October 31st, 2005, aged 64.  
Most recently Peter was Station Manager at West Suffolk Hospital Radio, in Bury St. Edmunds.   Donations should be sent to West Suffolk Hospital Radio.

Eric Noyce
Sadly, Eric Noyce, aged 88, who was at Harrow County 1929-34.  
Father of Old Gaytonian Chris Noyce.

Arnold George Nyburg
Sadly, Arnold Nyburg, who was at Harrow County 1918-25, died on 3rd September, 2005, aged 96.  
He was always proud of his old school, and was a first XV rugby player, and Victor Ludorum.  He won the DSC in the Normandy invasion in the Second World War.

Gordon Stanbridge
Sadly, Gordon Stanbridge, who was at Harrow County 1927-32, died on 3rd June, 2005, in his 90th year.  

Mr. Gerry Lafferty
Sadly, Gerry Lafferty, who taught English at Harrow County from 1961 to 1975, died on Monday August 15th, 2005, aged 75.

Anthony Andrews
Sadly, Anthony Andrews passed away from cancer on April 6th, 2005. He entered Harrow County in 1945.   In the last year of his life he made contact with many of his old school chums through this website. 

Bob Buckland
Sadly, Bob Buckland died on Tuesday 10th May 2005.  

 

David Webber
Sadly, David Leigh Webber, who entered Harrow County in 1963, died on January 7th, 2005.   He was Head of Radiopharmacy at Kings College Hospital.  

Reverend Professor Peter Ackroyd
Sadly, P. R. Ackroyd, who entered Harrow County in 1929, died on January 23rd, 2005, aged 87. 
From Harrow County he went to Downing College, Cambridge.  He was a distinguished scholar and taught at Leeds University and Cambridge before becoming the Samuel Davidson Professor of Old Testament Studies at London University, occupying the chair for more than 20 years.

 

Mr. John Bodiam
Sadly, John T. Bodiam, who taught Science at Harrow County from 1959-66, died in November 2004 after a long illness. 
Obituaries

Deryck Peperell
Sadly, Deryck Peperell, who entered Harrow County in 1931, died on October  21st, 2004.  He was Chairman of the Old Gaytonians Cricket Club for many years and Captain for a time.  A powerful presence at Sudbury, he gave many hours to the OGA and the Sportsground.  To other cricket clubs he was the OGCC, as someone said when he was elected Captain.  Notably cantankerous in committee - and socially - he was actually excellent company and always admired and respected for his commitment to and hard work for the Old Gaytonians.  He was also a long time member of the OG Golf Society.

 

K R (Bobby) Constable
Sadly, Bob Constable, who was at Harrow County 1929-33, died on July 27th, 2004.  He was Chairman of the OGA for a good many years from the mid-1950's onwards.  He held various offices in the OGA and rugby section and at one time was manager of the Bushey branch of Barclay's Bank.  He played in the first OGRFC rugby match.

 

REG GOFF 
Sadly, Mr. R. A. Goff, who was Head of Modern Subjects at Harrow County, died on Sunday, 9th May, 2004.

R. O. S. (Ross) Salmon
Sadly, Ross Salmon, who was at Harrow County 1935-39 died on April 14th, 2004, at the age of 80.  Remembered for his ability at cricket, and as a well-known childrens entertainer, with his cowboy character, author and broadcaster.

MR. ARTHUR HALEY
Sadly, Mr. Haley, who taught music at Harrow County 1959-75, died on Tuesday, 13th January, 2004 at the age of 87.

MAJOR HUGH SKILLEN 1915-2004
Sadly, Mr. Skillen, who taught at Harrow County 1946-75, died on Sunday, 4th January, 2004.
As well as being the former Head of Modern Languages at Harrow County, he was widely known as the historian of the wartime 'Y' (Wireless Intelligence) services.

TONY RHOADES
We are saddened to have to report that Tony Rhoades passed away on April 18th, 2003.  One of the great and most loyal Old Gaytonians, Tony was an outstanding Chairman of the OGA and held many offices in the Association, the Sportsground and the Rugby and Athletic clubs.

Class of 1954 - Golden Jubilee Reunion

Gaytonian in the news - Sir Nigel Sheinwald (Harrow County 1964-71)  has been appointed to the post of Foreign Policy Adviser to Prime Minister Tony Blair in succession to Sir David Manning.   Sir Nigel is currently the UK's Permanent Representative to the European Union.  He will take up the post later this year when Sir David Manning leaves the Prime Minister's Office to become British Ambassador in Washington.   Sir Nigel is currently the UK's Permanent Representative to the European Union.  He will take up the post later this year when Sir David Manning leaves the Prime Minister's Office to become British Ambassador in Washington.

Major General Andrew Ritchie (HCS 1964- ) has been appointed Commandant of Sandhurst.

Gaytonian in the news - The New York Times reported on January 24th that Sir Paul Nurse will become President of Rockefeller University on November 3rd, 2003.  Rockefeller is a graduate and research institution in Manhattan that is focused on biomedical research, with about 1,000 scientists.

Gaytonian in the news - Sir Derek Morris, Chairman of the Competition Commission, has been knighted in the New Years Honours List.  Sir Derek has also been pre-elected as Provost of Oriel, Oxford.

Paul Oliver, former Art Master at Harrow County, received an MBE in the New Years Honours List for services to architectural education.

Frank Kirkham (HCS 1961- ) received an MBE in the New Years Honours List (Military Division) for services to the Territorial Army.

Gaytonian in the news:  Former Science Master Mr. Norman Tyrwhitt was made an honorary freeman of the borough of Watford in October 2004. The title was bestowed on him in recognition of work carried out to improve the town.  Mr. Tyrwhitt has twice been Mayor of Watford.
