Form 2C

Form 2C 1943 – Form-mistress Mrs (Hairy Mary) Simpson

by Roy Goldman

Boys in the class that I remember were: Ray Alexander, David Barlow, Robert Blackburn, Bill Bowley, Jock Burton, Derek Clarke, John Cooley, Michael Cray, Dennis Drake, Ron Eaton, David Fear, Colin Goldbart, Colin Grundy, Alan Hart, Derek (Wally) Hammond, Peter Hurn, Peter Hutcherson, Harry Jones, Malcolm Love, Stan Miller, Ken Newens, Eddie Nutt, Micky Peat, Syd Porter, Tony Priggs, Peter Rice, Dennis Rudd, Micky Shrank, Keith Smith, Brian Southwell, Roy Street, John Tanner, Wally Vandome, John Woodman - plus me! Roy Goldman. Makes 35.

Alan Reid and Emmanuel Lee joined the ‘C’ stream, some time after the first year – perhaps replacing David Barlow and Tony Priggs who I think left H.C.S. well before School Cert.

After 3 years, 4c and 4d merged into 5d which would be a four year Matric stream with a Lower 5th being created that would do a five year Matric.

In 5d I sat next to Terry Golding (always alphabetical seating!) with whom I became friends – in fact staying with him in Harrow for a couple of years after my own parents split up. We also picked up Cyril Kesslau, John Cadman, ? Talantyre, ? Peover, ? Michael Rolph etc. etc.

Sadly, Keith Smith died of Rheumatic fever while in the third or fourth form and we now learn from Stan Miller that Peter Rice also passed away, in recent years.

Currently in touch via email are John Cooley (Suffolk), Stan Miller (Oz), Dennis Rudd (Sussex), Wally Vandome (Hants) and of course myself in Oz. I have had a single email this year from Peter Hutcherson who was on his way to South Africa and promised to get in touch on his return.

Robert Blackburn (Oxford) writes to me regularly and he in turn meets periodically with Bill Bowley (Northwood). We know that Roy Street was around in 2001 – as he attended the 90th Birthday celebration at the school.

That’s about it as of Sept. 14th 2003 – any updates, comments or input of any kind, please feel free.

Roy Goldman.

Other notes:

Form 2D

Michael Rolph writes, "Form 2D assembled in the end hut in September 1943 under Miss Baranyay who taught English and History. I have a strong and rather forbidding memory of the whole of the year being made to attend School one Saturday morning and being kept in the hall seated en-masse whilst Randall-Williams tried to persuade the culprits who had written graffiti on the walls above the coat pegs to own up. Needless to say nobody did confess."

Michael Barber 2D
Albert Board 2D (First in 880 yards walk, Middle School Championship, 1947, with a new school record of 3 mins 49 secs.  First in 880 yards walk team race, .  Played for 2nd XI Cricket 1948.  Michael Rolph writes:  "I have a strong memory of one of our evening cricket matches at Kenton Rec.  Albert always opened the batting. I went in No 3 and John Cadman at No 4. On this particular evening (probably against the C form and Mickey Peat), we were all out for 4 runs. Board 1, Rolph 1, Cadman 1,  Byes 1 total 4. We lost !")
Maurice Cadman 2D  (Michael Rolph writes: "John Cadman (Caddy) our cricket captain in the hard fought games at Kenton Rec against the C Form")
Alex Clarke 2D
Clark(e) [another] 2D
Bernard Edghill 2D
Terry Golding 2D (played for 2nd XI Cricket 1948, 1st XI 1949.)
Jim Hubbard 2D
Edmond Jacketts 2D
Cyril Kesslau 2D
Peter Lucas 2D  (In 26th Harrow (St. Paul's) Scout Troop
Newton Myers 2D  (Richard Myers writes:  "I seem to remember that I was in 2D but it might have been 2C, perhaps someone will remember. My WW2 years were somewhat traumatic, my mother died , my father married again (very happily I hasten to add – (Peter Lucas met my step mother when he came to tea with me)  and we were ‘Doodlebugged” in Kenton Gardens. All these events occurred in 1944 and I think my mind has rather blotted out any school memories.
"I was christened “Newton Richard Huntley Myers” and hence the name Richard was not used at that time. This only became my “popular” first name in 1948 when as an office boy in the City, my employers could not remember NEWTON ! Hence I adopted Richard, actually Dick, and have been colloquially know thusly ever since. A piece of real trivia is that Rev. Edgar Stogden who was Chairman of the board of Governors in 1932 (the year of my birth) baptised me and this can be confirmed by looking at the following page of my website…
http://www.ricmol.com/beginnings.htm   The baptismal card with the picture of the font clearly shows his signature, incidentally I still have the original."
Richard Myers emigrated to Canada in 1976.)

Peover 2D
Pinder (joined in 4D - came from Liverpool)
Michael (Mick) Rolph 2D  (Played for 2nd XI Cricket 1948.  Became a Governor of the School in the late 1980s.)

Shire 2D  (Only at HCS for one year)
John Stollery 2D
Douglas Talintyre 2D
Zac 2D  (Only at HCS for one year)
Don Whitmore? (Michael Rolph writes: "chunky and ginger haired who famously won the 100 yards at the district Inter schools at Headstone Lane in 1947 (the year that Bellamy Senior won the 220)")
