Harrow County School for Boys

Entry Year 1931

(Listed as Form II 1931-32 in the "Book of Commemoration", 1932, additional names from various sources.  Information for this list was also provided by Geoff Lawrance and Fred Sansom.)

Geoff Lawrance writes:  "Several of us in the 1931 intake - Hugh Green, Jack Greeno, Fred Sansom and I - (as well as numerous other older Old Gayts) joined, in early 1939,  the 162 Field Ambulance, RAMC (TA), the local TA unit with headquarters adjacent to the gasholder in South Harrow.  I have to admit that my motive in doing so was not patriotism but the desire to avoid being conscripted for six months military service in 1940 under new legislation that would have caught my age group.  I'm sure I wasn't the only one to be so ignobly motivated!  But of course the conscription legislation was overtaken by the outbreak of war, so we got our comeuppance by being called up on 2 September 1939, the day before war was declared."
