Towards the end of 1942 he went overseas to take part in the North African campaign, and in the spring of 1943 he lost his life during the fierce fighting on the Mareth Line.  Vic Senior writes (in the Old Gaytonian, 1993) I lost track of him completely until April 1972, when I was a guest speaker on a battlefield tour of the battle of Mareth, in Southern Tunisia, fought in 1943.  I had been a tank troop leader in the 50th RTR at the time. Another guest speaker was Major I R English, who was a company commander in the 8th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry during the battle.  Major English related that on the night of the attack, 'B' company of the DLI moved from their forming-up place down into the wadi under heavy shell and mortar fire.  The company commander came across a wounded officer and was talking to him when there was a blinding flash behind.  Lieutenant Pentney had stepped on a mine.  He was killed instantly, and those around him were badly wounded, including the company commander himself.  It was indeed our Doug, who had, in fact, been a Royal Fusilier (City of London Regiment) and was seconded to the DLI as a reinforcement officer.  He was aged 27, married, and now lied in the Sfax War Cemetery in Southern Tunisia.)
